The design of a high-performance stacked-patch microstrip antenna and its application to an array antenna

The characteristics of a two-layer stacked-patch microstrip antenna using foam as substrate and spacer are studied experimentally. The effects of varying the physical parameters of the antenna structure on bandwidth and edge input impedance are investigated in detail to achieve required specifications. Two different methods of driving the antenna, probe feed and microstrip line feed, are compared. The experimental results show the bandwidth of the stacked-patch microstrip antenna is more than 25%, and the edge impedance of driven patch is reduced to 100Q that can easily be designed into a coplanar feed network for an antenna array. The low cost microstrip array with 64 stacked-patch elements has also been constructed and its performance is presented in this paper.
