Aerodynamic effect of grooved bearing on an aerostatic slideway

In order to increase the efficiency of an aerostatic linear guideway system, an increase of the feed rate of the working table is necessary. When sliding begins, the aerostatic bearing on a slideway tends to generate a wedge-shaped film gap as well as an aerodynamic effect. This paper investigates the characteristics of a grooved rectangular bearing when the aerodynamic effect caused by high-speed feeding system is applied to the bearing. The Newmark integration method and the modified resistance network method, which takes into account the equilibrium of the mass flow rate and aerodynamic force generation, are used to analyze the characteristics of the grooved aerostatic bearing on a slideway system and the time-dependent dynamic behaviors at each time step. Finally, the dynamic responses of the purposed bearing caused by aerodynamic effect are demonstrated in the current paper. The results show that when sliding begins, the aerostatic bearing on a slideway tends to generate a wedge-shaped film gap and the aerodynamic effect depends very much on the aerostatic bearing with a groove or not.
