Yeast diversity associated with the biting midge Forcipomyia taiwana in Taiwan

Abstract

Forcipomyia taiwana, commonly known as the little black biting midge, is one of the most annoying blood-sucking midges. In recent years, biting midges have spread widely and rapidly and influenced human activities. Currently, biting midges are primarily a nuisance and a major medical concern in Taiwan and southern China. In this study, we collected biting midges from central Taiwan, and characterized the yeast microbiota associated with these biting midges according to large subunit of ribosomal DNA sequences. The results revealed numerous yeast species from the unexplored habitat of the surface and interior of F. taiwana. This study provides useful information for future research and the development of treatment strategies for biological control.
