Patient safety culture plays an important role in health organizations as they seek to continuously improve patient safety. The safety culture of health organizations is generally understood through six dimensions that are captured in the hospital survey on patient safety culture. So far, these dimensions have been treated as discrete thereby limiting managers understanding of how to direct their efforts to effectively improve patient safety. In this study, we take a more holistic perspective to explore the cause and effect relationships amongst the six safety dimensions in patient safety culture. We adopt the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method to analyze data from fourteen experts in the area of safety culture. Findings show that teamwork climate is the only dimension that causes direct and positive impacts on both stress recognition and safety climate. This study reveals that of all the dimensions of patient safety culture managers should pay particular attention to teamwork climate in order to improve patient safety.
