N2 - In 2006, Zhang and Wang proposed a novel data hiding method, namely the exploiting modification direction (EMD) scheme. In their scheme, the secret message in a (2n + 1)-ary notational system is carried by n cover pixels, where n is a system parameter, and at most one pixel is increased or decreased by 1. The EMD scheme exhibits two disadvantages: the secret message must be converted into a non-binary system, and the embedding capacity is limited. In this study, a new data hiding scheme, based on a regular octagon-shaped shell, is proposed to overcome the EMD scheme’s shortcomings.
