Circularly polarized slot antenna with three-dimensional ring-shaped ground plane

Abstract

A novel design for circularly polarized antennas with broadband operation is proposed. The proposed antenna structure can be regarded as a three-dimensional version of a planar ring slot antenna, but no printed circuit board is involved in the structure. Moreover, the circular polarization radiation is achieved by introducing a shorting post into the antenna structure as a perturbation element. Measured results indicate that the 3-dB-axial-ratio bandwidth of the proposed antenna is two times larger than that of the printed ring slot antenna with the same aperture size. Simulation results obtained with HFSS also agree well with the experimental data.
