A 4.6 GHz rectifier-driven CMOS voltage-controlled oscillator

Abstract

A wide tuning range voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) implemented in 0.6 um SPTM CMOS technology is described. This ring structured VCO consists of three-stage ring oscillator with differential type delay cell. A buffer and a bridge rectification are designed to double the frequency. The circuit generates 2.5 GHz oscillating frequencies with 17 mW power dissipation for a ± 2 V supply voltage. The controllable frequencies are ranging from 2.5 GHz to 700 MHz. For ± 3 V supply voltage, the designed VCO attains 4.6 GHz oscillating frequency, while consuming only 63 mW power.
