有鑑於我國交通運輸產業的快速發展以及車輛工程相關等高科技人力需求逐漸增加,於民國93年成立本所(車輛與軌道技術研究所),後為配合本校轉型計畫及本所未來中長程規畫,於民國95年8月1日起經教育部核准更名為「車輛科技研究所」,更致力於車輛科技相關技術之發展與人才之培育。    綜觀近年來世界各國對於車輛新科技的發展有兩個主要的方向與議題,第一是潔淨替代能源的開發與研究,另一個是結合電子資訊等相關技術在智慧型車輛的控制與應用上,企圖使車輛的操控性、舒適性與安全性增加並達到即時通訊的目的。國內電腦通訊及消費電子產業蓬勃發展,但卻在車用電子與電控系統以及整合車輛專業知識與電子通訊知識的人才較為缺乏,因此本所以培養具有整合車輛相關新科技與電子通訊相關知識之人才為主,並對車輛相關前瞻技術進行相關之學術與技術研究並提升車輛相關產業之國際競爭實力。
