本校成立於民國59年1月,原名台灣省中等學校教師研習會;60年8月1日改制為台灣省立教育學院,並附設中等學校教師研習會;69年8月改隸教育部,名為國立台灣教育學院;78年8月升格為國立彰化師範大學,當時僅設立教育學院、科學校育學院、職業教育學院。當時文學院並未成立,但有些相關系所則已在教育學院裏完善運作著。其後隨著學校的發展足跡,文學院逐步成型與茁壯。   本校文學院正式成立於民國89年10月5日,如今本院計有「國文系」、「英語系」、「地理系」、「美術系」,「翻譯研究所」、「兒童英語研究所」、「台灣文學研究所」及民國98年8月起加入的「歷史學研究所」等教學單位。
